Snaefellsnes Beach Ride

2005

This is a shorter version of the Snaefellsnes Beach and Mountain Tour. Without the mountain section it is a little easier and is suitable for riders of moderate experience. This route traverses black and white sand on a traditional trail on Löngufjörur beach. Views of Snæfellsjökull Glacier in the distance and the mighty Eldborgarhraun lava field on the ride back to the farm lend accent to this ride and give riders a realization of being in a unique place. This ride gives the Icelandic experience of riding with a herd of free horses running along. The tour includes 4 days and 3 nights and covers 120 km.

Here's an itinerary :

Monday night

Travelers from the US leave for Iceland

from Boston, Baltimore, New York, or Minneapolis, (Orlando and San Francisco may require leaving a bit earlier) on an overnight flight with an early morning arrival at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.

Tuesday

A day to ease into Iceland’s time and light after a short night on the plane. Your first night in Iceland in a guesthouse or hotel is included.

Wednesday

Stóri-Kálfalækur - Kolviðarnes - Lindartunga Community Centre

The riding tour starts with a morning transfer to Stóri Kálfalækur farm where the ride starts. After an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits there's a ride down to the shore. A chance to see the Eldborgarhraun lava-field and its crater on the approach to Kolviðarnes Farm where the horses will spend the night and the tour members are driven to Lindartunga. Hot showers on site and a swimming pool heated with geothermal water nearby. (5 - 6 hours)

Thursday

Lindartunga - Traðir - Lýsuhóll Schoolhouse

After rejoining the horses it's a ride on Löngufjörur, an old and well known horse trail on the seashores of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. There’s a dramatic view of the nearby Snæfellsjökull Glacier, known from the literature of Jules Verne to be the entrance to the center of the earth. The horses will show their excitement on this extraordinary trail uncovered by the tide. At day’s end the horses spend the night at Traðir Farm while the riders stay at Lýsuhóll schoolhouse with a geothermal swimming pool on site. (6 - 7 hours)

Friday

Lýsuhóll - Traðir - Lindartunga Community Centre

Another day on the yellow colored, sandy beach (unusual in this land of black beaches). A change in directions and it's back towards mighty Eldborgarhraun lava field. A unique experience for everyone with lava-fields and mountains on one side of the trail and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Overnight again at Lindartunga community center. Hot showers on site. (6 - 7 hours)

Saturday

Lindartunga - Traðir - Stóri- Kálfalækur Farm

Last day on the beach. The sand turns black as we follow the outline of Eldborgarhraun lava field. One can almost imagine the black lava still on the move on the ride back to dry land. The ride ends at Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm, bidding farewell to hosts and horses and a drive back to Reykjavík. (5 - 6 hours) Your last night will be in a nice hotel so you can experience some of the fabled nightlife, or just get a good meal and relax.
Sunday:

Farewell to Iceland

You'll have a long morning to relax, explore Iceland's capital city, visit geothermal swimming pools, cafes, museums and shops, before taking the bus to Keflavik Airport in time for your flight back home.
