Adventure

2008

  • 2 Days of riding
  • Easy Riding
  • Runs every week from March Through October

If you are one of those people who think of the Vikings and their ships and don’t give a thought to the Vikings and their horses this tour might be what you need to round out your understanding of Viking history.

Just outside of Reykjavík you can discover great riding tracks through lava fields and into Heiðmörk Nature Park. Enjoy the horses that the Vikings brought to this starkly beautiful island just below the Arctic Circle. The riding tour includes a night at the Viking Hotel in Hafnarfjörður. Many different horses to choose from and friendly and competent riding guides make this tour a great experience.

Here's a Sample Itinerary -

Monday Night

Welcome to Iceland
Travelers from the US leave for Iceland

Americans fly out on the night before the tour begins in Iceland. Travelers from Europe can leave on the same day that the tour starts.

Tuesday
Early arrival in Iceland

From Keflavik, there’s a convenient shuttle bus which will drop you at the hotel where you’ll spend the night. Then you’ll have the day to explore Iceland's capital city. There’s lots to do and see, and plenty of interesting places to eat. Then get a good night’s sleep, as, tomorrow you ride!

Wednesday
Reykjavík - Íshestar Riding Centre - Hafnarfjörður

You are picked up this morning at about 8:30 and taken to the Ishestar Riding Center for a short introduction to the horse. Then it’s off into the lovely countryside for a relaxed morning ride. The ride goes along very pleasant riding tracks revealing landscapes shaped by volcanic power centuries ago. After lunch the riding group will circle the extinct volcano Mt. Helgafell and enjoy the sure-footed horses on a variety of tracks. After the afternoon ride ends you’ll be taken to the Viking Hotel in neighboring Hafnarfjörður for dinner and overnight stay. You’ll have the rest of the evening to relax and see a bit of the harborside town of Hafnafjordur.

Thursday
Hafnarfjörður - Íshestar Riding Centre - Reykjavík

You’ll be taken back to the Riding Center, given a bag lunch and then set off to ride through Heiðmörk Nature Park. A few examples of the power of Nature in Iceland are the Maríuhellir lava cave and the mighty Búrfellsgjá fissure. Whether you join this tour in spring, summer or fall, riding on good riding tracks in this fascinating landscape is a great experience. After the ride transfer back to your hotel in Reykjavík at around 5 PM.

Friday
Home again!.. Or..

For those returning home, the Flybus will take riders back to Keflavik International Airport in the early afternoon. Or you can start further explorations of Iceland, and we’ll be happy to help plan those travels.
